Implementation of MPEG-4s Subdivision Surfaces Tools
This work is about the implementation of a MPEG-4 decoder for subdivision surfaces, which are powerful 3D paradigms allowing to compactly represent piecewise smooth surfaces. This study will take place in the framework of MPEG-4 AFX, the extension of the MPEG-4 standard including the subdivision surfaces. This document will introduce, with some details, the theory of subdivision surfaces in the two forms present in MPEG-4: plain and detailed/ wavelet subdivision surfaces. It will particularly concentrate on wavelet subdivision surfaces, which permit progressive 3D mesh compression
In vivo imaging of the central and peripheral effects of sleep deprivation and suprachiasmatic nuclei lesion on PERIOD-2 protein in mice.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: That sleep deprivation increases the brain expression of various clock genes has been well documented. Based on these and other findings we hypothesized that clock genes not only underlie circadian rhythm generation but are also implicated in sleep homeostasis. However, long time lags have been reported between the changes in the clock gene messenger RNA levels and their encoded proteins. It is therefore crucial to establish whether also protein levels increase within the time frame known to activate a homeostatic sleep response. We report on the central and peripheral effects of sleep deprivation on PERIOD-2 (PER2) protein both in intact and suprachiasmatic nuclei-lesioned mice.
DESIGN: In vivo and in situ PER2 imaging during baseline, sleep deprivation, and recovery.
SETTINGS: Mouse sleep-recording facility.
PARTICIPANTS: Per2::Luciferase knock-in mice.
INTERVENTIONS: N/A.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Six-hour sleep deprivation increased PER2 not only in the brain but also in liver and kidney. Remarkably, the effects in the liver outlasted those observed in the brain. Within the brain the increase in PER2 concerned the cerebral cortex mainly, while leaving suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) levels unaffected. Against expectation, sleep deprivation did not increase PER2 in the brain of arrhythmic SCN-lesioned mice because of higher PER2 levels in baseline. In contrast, liver PER2 levels did increase in these mice similar to the sham and partially lesioned controls.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results stress the importance of considering both sleep-wake dependent and circadian processes when quantifying clock-gene levels. Because sleep deprivation alters PERIOD-2 in the brain as well as in the periphery, it is tempting to speculate that clock genes constitute a common pathway mediating the shared and well-known adverse effects of both chronic sleep loss and disrupted circadian rhythmicity on metabolic health
Particle filter-based camera tracker fusing marker- and feature point-based cues
This paper presents a video-based camera tracker that combines marker-based and feature point-based cues in a particle filter framework. The framework relies on their complementary performances. Marker-based trackers can robustly recover camera position and orientation when a reference (marker) is available, but fail once the reference becomes unavailable. On the other hand, filter-based camera trackers using feature point cues can still provide predicted estimates given the previous state. However, these tend to drift and usually fail to recover when the reference reappears. Therefore, we propose a fusion where the estimate of the filter is updated from the individual measurements of each cue. More precisely, the marker-based cue is selected when the reference is available whereas the feature point-based cue is selected otherwise. Evaluations on real cases show that the fusion of these two approaches outperforms the individual tracking results
Image Replica Detection based on Binary Support Vector Classifier
In this paper, we present a system for image replica detection. More specifically, the technique is based on the extraction of 162 features corresponding to texture, color and gray-level characteristics. These features are then weighted and statistically normalized. To improve training and performances, the features space dimensionality is reduced. Lastly, a decision function is generated to classify the test image as replica or non-replica of a given reference image. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system. Target applications include search for copyright infringement (e.g. variations of copyrighted images) and illicit content (e.g. pedophile images)
Images Identification Based on Equivalence Classes
The image identification problem consists in identifying all the equivalent forms of a given reference image. An image is equivalent to the reference image, if the former results from the application of an image operator (or a composition of image operators) to the latter. Depending on the application, different sets of image operators are considered. The equivalence quantification is done in three levels. In the first level, we construct the set of equivalent images which is composed of the reference and its modified versions obtained through the application of image operators. In the second level, visual features are extracted from images in the equivalence set and their distances to the reference image are computed. In the third level, an orthotope (generalized rectangle) is fit to the set of distance vectors corresponding to the equivalent images. The equivalence of an unknown image with respect to a given reference is defined according to whether the corresponding distance vector is inside, or outside, the orthotope. The results of our algorithm are assessed in terms of the false positive and false negative errors (computed over different choices of reference images and operators)
Identification of Image Variations based on Equivalence Classes
This paper presents a fingerprinting method based on equivalence classes. An equivalence class is composed of a reference image and all its variations (or replicas). For each reference image, a decision function is built. The latter determines if a given image belongs to its corresponding equivalence class. This function is built in three steps: synthesis, projection, and analysis. In the first step, the reference image is replicated using different image operators (like JPEG compression, average filtering, etc). During the projection step, the replicas are projected onto a distance space. In the final step, the distance space is analyzed, using machine learning algorithms, and the decision function is built. In this study, three machine learning approaches are compared: orthotope, support vectors machine (SVM), and support vectors data description (SVDD). The orthotope is a computationally efficient ad-hoc method. It consists in building a generalized rectangle in the distance space. The SVM and SVDD are two more general learning algorithms
Dynamic Glass Transition in Two Dimensions
The question about the existence of a structural glass transition in two
dimensions is studied using mode coupling theory (MCT). We determine the
explicit d-dependence of the memory functional of mode coupling for
one-component systems. Applied to two dimensions we solve the MCT equations
numerically for monodisperse hard discs. A dynamic glass transition is found at
a critical packing fraction phi_c^{d=2} = 0.697 which is above phi_c^{d=3} =
0.516 by about 35%. phi^d_c scales approximately with phi^d_{\rm rcp} the value
for random close packing, at least for d=2, 3. Quantities characterizing the
local, cooperative 'cage motion' do not differ much for d=2 and d=3, and we
e.g. find the Lindemann criterion for the localization length at the glass
transition. The final relaxation obeys the superposition principle, collapsing
remarkably well onto a Kohlrausch law. The d=2 MCT results are in qualitative
agreement with existing results from MC and MD simulations. The mean squared
displacements measured experimentally for a quasi-two-dimensional binary system
of dipolar hard spheres can be described satisfactorily by MCT for monodisperse
hard discs over four decades in time provided the experimental control
parameter Gamma (which measures the strength of dipolar interactions) and the
packing fraction phi are properly related to each other.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure
Steganography for Three-Dimensional Polygonal Meshes
This paper proposes a method to embed information into a 3D model represented by a polygonal mesh. The approach used consists in slightly changing the position of the vertices, in uencing the length of approximation of the normals to the surface. This technique exhibits relatively low complexity, and o ers robustness to simple geometric tranformations. In addition, it does not introduce any visible distortion to the original model
Multiple light scattering in nematic liquid crystals
We present a rigorous treatment of the diffusion approximation for multiple
light scattering in anisotropic random media, and apply it to director
fluctuations in a nematic liquid crystal. For a typical nematic material, 5CB,
we give numerical values of the diffusion constants and .
We also calculate the temporal autocorrelation function measured in Diffusing

Three-Particle Correlations in Simple Liquids
We use video microscopy to follow the phase-space trajectory of a
two-dimensional colloidal model liquid and calculate three-point correlation
functions from the measured particle configurations. Approaching the
fluid-solid transition by increasing the strength of the pair-interaction
potential, one observes the gradual formation of a crystal-like local order due
to triplet correlations, while being still deep inside the fluid phase.
Furthermore, we show that in a strongly interacting system the Born-Green
equation can be satisfied only with the full triplet correlation function but
not with three-body distribution functions obtained from superposing
